# Employees are not bonded labour

Restored from Instagram stories · 25 January 2024

few points.

this is an email which i received. this isn't the only pattern. time and time again, i receive 1000s of dms and emails where people complain that they don't earn enough as a fresher.

first of all, the dream salaries, the $100k salaries in tech are not the norm. the IIT placement cell salary?

like why are people deluded to the point - that thinking 25k INR per month take home as salary in a tier-3 city is far more than what people get paid when they enter an industry.

you're literally a fresher! you know nothing. you're making yourself useful to your organization. you're going to learn work and professionalism here. you're going to employ the skills you've learnt through these years of studying and hope to not mess up things.

second, I've told this a 1000 times. all forms of employment bond are illegal and morally unethical.

employees aren't slaves. you can't bond them to work anywhere. if you're a company who has bond, you suck.

most companies repeatedly tell me that having a bond ensures that the amount that they spend training the fresher doesn't go to waste and they can extract some billing hours to compensate and profit.

let me repeat - this is literally the definition of slavery. you investing on training an employee who's going to work for you is part of the risk in your investment. if you cannot do that, f*ck you and you don't deserve to run a company. you don't know how to run one.

third - most people work 40-50 hrs a week in software/tech.

your youth is the single most advantage you have against generational wealth.

if you aren't willing to put 80-100 hrs of work per week (not fully on work alone but also on studying, learning) - trust me. you are not on par the ability of guys who make $300-500k in tech let alone $100k. only a small fraction of tech guys enjoy >$300k TC.

most guys who join a tech co in their younger days will spend their youth in fun things. not complaining or berating them at all.

the ones who clock 80-100 hrs a week and have immense work discipline? you aren't beating them.

maybe their effort isn't valued at the current co. but with the skills they gathered, life and the next co. is gonna value them more.

and you do all of this but can't finish some freaking arrears in an undergrad/postgrad engineering course?

meh. you ain't gonna make it.

---
the bottom line is this,

in your youth, if you see a guy who spends more time on himself in work and in continuously learning - instead of just engaging in other activites that a typical youth engages,

bear in mind - that youth will go places you'll never imagine. that youth basically increased his probabilities of success so high that it's tough to compete or beat him.

maybe that youth isn't doing well now..but sure as hell he ain't staying broke.

that youth is retiring rich.

your choices. your consequences.

no way that i support companies exploiting people with so long work hours.

but pointing out that exemplary individuals who want to rise up always worked hard and clocked longer hours.

hard work beats talent. everytime.

imagine having a workplace where your employees want to jump ship the minute they get the training?

fix your internal culture. that's your shit to fix. fix how your team culture is.

people should want to never leave your workplace. they should want to get back to office. they should feel the pain of separation or not being in the office if they are working in home.

that's the epitome of a great place to work in and an amazing work culture.
