Making creative work sustainable

Restored from Instagram stories ·

i’ve seen a lot of people who create content as their livelihood or as their side hustle in order to make some extra money or make enough to quit their primary job become frustrated over

why they aren’t able to make big as others do - even though they put in extraordinary work and invest a lot of time with ZERO results.

let me get you into some basics.

1. be very clear whether you are here to gain followers by any means and then use them to sell advertisements

or you want to create content because you like to create one and gain an audience which loves it.

if it’s the former, you only need to do what’s on trend and most of you aren’t cut for it - and if it’s the latter, continue reading.

2. the biggest mistake most creators make is thinking that they need to put content like how people in the west do. super high quality and all that hard work.

you are again mistaken. the average iq is 77 in india - you need your content to be absolute mid so that everyone can easily relate and understand. totally dumb it down. target it like how a 12 yo will understand what you speak.

the ‘super high quality’ here is just editing and a good camera. nothing else.

just show up every day and be consistent and you’re already in top 10%

if you put anything above than what the median audience can understand, they won’t see through the video - the algorithm won’t push your other videos and your account will die.

concentrate on short videos since people with low iq’s can’t have long attention spans.

i am not worried about them reading this either since they’d have skipped through these stories as well. don’t worry. i can only offend low iq people if they can see this.

4. absolute short videos win like crazy. tell bite sized info of whatever you like in a very slow way - you’ll win.

figure out how to monetize this. on the authority that you created as an expert, sell a course or a service and they’ll hail you as their god.

but if you’re against this, if you’re an actual content creator who makes amazing content, writes amazing stuff, produces really great work - whatever that might be,

you need to stick and read through.

now that we’ve filtered through trash - let’s come to actual content creation.

if you’re an amazing content creator who need to sustain, you only need 1000 fans who can be your patrons.

just 1000 fans sustaining you can make you quit your full time job and do this full time. especially in india, and it even works in u.s as well.

create quality content which 1000 of your fans are prepared to spend 500-800 inr or $5-10 per month on.

that’s more than enough for you to do this full time.

so who’s your audience? find them. quality > quantity. if you’re creating amazing content, your liberal arts studying friend ain’t gonna afford that.

i see a lot of amazing friends from the left end of political spectrum create good writings, poems, paintings etc.,

it doesn’t hurt to understand how marketing or capitalism works. it’s ok if you hate capitalism - just pretend to like it if it can sustain you to do what you like.

capitalism works that way. it’s not a cult. it doesn’t need you to believe in it - it works as long as there’s demand and supply.

you just need to put your work in front of 1000 people who are your ardent supporters/fans who can afford to spend 500-800 inr per month or $5-10 from their salaries on you.

they spend a lot more than that in a swiggy/coma to purchase for a single meal.

can you provide enough value that you can make them spend that small money on you?

so how do you do that?

create something that people want.

even if you’ve one fan, talk with them what did they like the most.

if whatever you create is a page, don’t ask friends to follow and ask them to support you. they’re low signal. they like it not because they like what you do - but because they like you.

that’s a super bad signal. you won’t find your actual audience. you’ll never find the 1000 people who’ll make this your career.

just put the word across and see who’s gonna come. just ask them to check it out and see what sticks.

constantly change how you ask people to check out to understand if it’s attractive enough to bring them close.

iterate iterate iterate. talk with every one of those 100 loyal followers and supporters. ask them what would they like to spend on if you create something.

i’ve given you something to think about for now - more later.

another important thing here.

and, never read negative story or failure stories on how people failed. it’s of zero use. there are a 1000 probabilities to fail and the default setting is to actually fail. you’ll literally fail if you don’t even do anything. so many ways to fail.

and only one or 10 to succeed and most are repeatable. concentrate on the success stories.
