i see a lot of startups and those who are into tech (especially deep/hard tech) getting fleeced into spending so much money on patenting.
no. don't do it.
patents are useless.
unless you're in research, kindly don't do that.
people tell you that having a patent protects your idea. contrary to public opinion, no it doesn't.
only you can protect it. not the patent. the patent gives you the ability to sue someone. that's it.
and do you know what wins patent wars? the side that can outspend the other like crazy.
when you write a patent, it's in public view. people will know how exactly you made it. there are dedicated depts. within big industries which exist who literally try out ways to circumnavigate your materials and your way. they'll beat your patent. you're making it easy for them.
rather protect them as trade secrets. you don't talk about them. it exists within your co. no one knows how it works. it's your intellectual property.
plus, this is most important.
forget that your idea is super unique that no one has. there is more likely that two people have the same idea and the winner is the guy who outperforms the other in execution.
competition on internal ideas and moves happen later in your company cycle. you are too early to think about that. you're probably wasting time, energy, money and resources into things that won't make a dent to your momentum.
not to mention about patent trolls. not a huge concern in India. just build. don't worry about anything else.
don't get distracted on fancy words like patent and stuff. build, ship, sell and scale.
