where did we go wrong in education or where are we actually right ?
it's not right to plainly blame our education system isn't right when stats actually say that what we have currently as our edu. system has managed to produce brilliance and also has contributed significantly in raising the status of the poor to the middle class in TN (which enjoys a higher middle class ratio)
then, we still do blame education. where is it going wrong again ? we all feel it's wrong. the fact is that, we all can't seem to figure where it might be is.
i hypothesize it might be with the structuring of learning and not the entire system.
or it could be the pedagogy of something is taught and it's assessment model.
or it could be the combination of all of that.
if we consider education as a vector space where you'd find anything to learn, each point of learning (subject) could be a vector which is merely an element of a vector space.
so, there are multiple subjects (learning points) inside a vector space, whose position could be determined as (X1,Y2) (X3, Y7) and so on... (imagine this as a two dimensional space - expand it to three dimensional and add Z if you have more dependencies on subjects.
meaning: drama is literature with art (a derivative of four main arts) - so if you're next learning point isngonna be drama/the other ones, you can mark it as Z)
so, you might be thinking since i said, this is the next point, will there be a path ?
exactly.
i am just denoting vector from point A to B. A can be a short form of the coordinate i explained before and B could be the other.
like A = X5, Y7 and B = X8, Y3 (imagine plotting points in a graph) and drawing a line through them.
so, i am just visualising education in a different way - based on my personal experience on how i learnt. (I'll explain this more further in the next, next stories)
and ofcourse i am just using this like a note taking app. putting down my thoughts and i receive feedback from all of you.
let me just give you a basic idea and run through this. feel free to drop in DMs. i'll engage when i am free.
imagine a kid learns something super easy like disposing food and other easily decomposable material in a compost pit.
let the kid get engrossed in the process.
what are the possible paths the kid can take to learn from this ?
- earthworms and other bio organisms that thrive from this ? could this lead to a greater interest in learning zoology ? microbiology ? medical science ?
- soil structures, soil composition ? - could this lead to a greater interest in similar areas ?
do a memory map from one to another ?
this brings me to a point. why do we limit kids with grades in classes where they are limited to go into things they want to learn ? except math, nothing needs to be mandatory to any kid.
[a counterpoint: a personalised path still needs a defensible shared foundation. the proposal should explain how every child gains literacy and other essential capabilities, including children whose interests or available resources are narrow.]
so, a kid doesn't have to wait till their sixth grade to learn about zoology and develop a higher interest in that study.
if a kid can unlock their own subjects after learning one after the other based on their need, imagine how would creative fields and how much value you'd get ?
for example - you would have two design professionals but the two went through different paths to arrive at.the same place.
real life design is so different and we get to enrich ourselves in the unique perspectives.
if no two humans are the same in thoughts and actions, their experiences in their personal life, why should the education path be the same ? why can't they take their own path whatever they like ?
i gave you an example with designers. think that for an engineer or any other profession.
each with their own perspective and learning..no two people would have the same educational path in arriving at a goal.
each kid would approach this different unique path (which is tailored to their liking)..
wait. i am not done yet.
we all don't learn everything the same way. let's change teaching pedagogies. you choose the way how it's taught.
you can't judge a fish by how it can climb a tree. so, why should assessment methodologies remain the same ? why should we do the standard MCQs to know that a kid understood the lesson ?
tests were originally created to know whether they actually understood the lessons. now, it became a status symbol as to who can get the highest and who can crack it to win it.
let's say we have assessment models like diagnostic, formative, interim and summative (just putting the basics for discussions) - if a kid fails in one, let's send another. see what he passes in. maybe the assessment methodology was wrong - and the kid actually understood the lesson. now we'll know why the assessment method failed with this kid and see if there's a pattern among different abilities of kids which allows us to remove that assesment for those type of kids..
i am just thinking, if this is how education can actually be,
why isn't it though ?
so the real answer for education is not that the system is old, maybe - the path is.
if this model works, then each person's educational/learning success depends on the vector sum of all the learning points inside the vector space.
and that is cool.
do we have a nobel prize for education ?
inviting responses like these or people who'd have been in similar experiences. would love if mom's and dad's can share their experience
one question to parents.
if you're getting admission in your fav. school with recommendation or by paying large sums of money as a charitable donation,
if you're paying so much for your kids education in school for the only reason of quality education,
why are you stressed ?
why are you forced to care about your child's education ?
why are you running behind them ?
why are you blamed by their parents when they spent 3/4 of their active day with their peers and teachers in school ?
why are you getting them admitted to countless tuitions in a day ?
why ? if you had paid for a service/product and they don't deliver for what you've paid would you go around helping them or would you ask for a refund and go to the next one ?
what's so different in modern education?
